The character assassination of Uncle Tom, the main character in the book called Uncle Tom’s Cabin began right after its publishing in 1852. The book, authored by Harriet Beecher Stowe, stirred much controversy around the time of the Civil War. In fact, some argue the book led to the Civil War and helped electrify the abolitionist movement.
According to legend, President Abraham Lincoln commented to Harriet Beecher Stowe, “So you are the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war!”
In brief, the book is about a black slave in the 1800’s, called Uncle Tom; his life struggles and those associated with him. Moreover, it’s told by the author in a most captivating way. In fact, once beginning to read the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin, it’s hard to put down.
How do I know? Reading Uncle Tom’s Cabin was mesmerizing and at the same time, shocking!
For this reason, it’s clear to see how the emotions of Americans were stirred up against the slave states.
The Fabricated Character of Uncle Tom
What is the average person’s view today of the character Uncle Tom?
In short, most would still say Uncle Tom was a slave who sold-out his fellow slaves for advancement and position given by white slave owners. In fact, some refer to an “Uncle Tom” as a “Steppin’ and Fetchin’ Negro,” a betrayer of the black race.
Why is this the belief today? Because, these views have been circulated and taught throughout the book’s history.
To be sure, after reading the book cover-to-cover about the treatment of slaves in the south during those times, you’ll find it appalling. The book details the horrors of the slave-markets in New Orleans, my birthplace.
More shocking, was that the character of Uncle Tom was NOTHING like the negative character portrayed by others throughout my life.
Sadly, the heroic character revealed in the book is deliberately misrepresented by a complete distortion of truth over a hundred plus years.
TRUTH is, this belief that Uncle Tom was a traitor to black African Americans is based on a total LIE!
Moreover, with the continual spreading of the false narrative, that he was a betrayer, Uncle Tom’s name has become a derogatory epithet. Something to hate, by many, especially uninformed Americans, of all races.
Who Destroyed Uncle Tom’s Character?
Slave owners in the South, cotton-related industries in the North, and those who profited by keeping slavery legal in America, started the campaign to keep Uncle Tom’s true character hidden. In fact, Uncle Tom’s Cabin and his character was a threat to their very survival.
By keeping black Americans and white Americans hating—those who love controlling others, win!
Calling a black person an “Uncle Tom” is an effective tactic to shut them up. For this reason, liberals call conservative black people, “Uncle Tom’s,” even today.
Fact is, the lie continues spreading today, by those who want to keep Americans—more importantly, black Americans—from reading Stowe’s great novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Just one of many lies spread by those seeking power!
Why? Because, once Black Americans read Uncle Tom’s Cabin and discover the lies told about the character of Uncle Tom, they begin searching out other lies that keep them in bondage to Government.
To be sure, the lies meant to assassinate the characters of those fighting for the freedom of Black Americans, and ALL Americans, are toxic. But, thank God we have people still fighting for freedom of speech, religion, and the right to pursue happiness by all Americans, no matter the opposition.
The Truth about Uncle Tom the American Hero
Uncle Tom was a kind person who loved others more than himself. In fact, he served others, not out of gaining favor or position, but out of “agape” (unconditional) love, even for those who treated him poorly.
In the book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, you find that the character Uncle Tom was a True American Hero. In fact, Uncle Tom would NOT betray other slaves on the plantation where he was enslaved.
For this reason, the evil slave owner Simon Legree cruelly flogged Uncle Tom to death. Does that sound like the “Uncle Tom” you’ve heard about?
It’s said, that those who are willing to lay down their life for another shows the true meaning of love. Not to mention, bravery!
In truth, Uncle Tom’s character was closer to that of Jesus the Christ than any person I’ve read about.
The real “Uncle Tom’s” are Simon Legree’s two slave overseers, Sambo and Quimbo. Whereby, to keep their position on the cotton plantation in Louisiana, they did much steppin’ & fetchin’. In fact, they whipped fellow slaves into submission for their owner, Simon Legree.
Another Big Lie Spread Throughout the South
My bio on this website states, I grew up in the deep south during the 1950’s and 1960’s. As a result, I’ve heard a lie or two, and have witnessed REAL bigotry by whites, to black Americans. Moreover, I became aware of how the Democrats use subtle methods to maintain power at the expense of the poor—black and white people.
One of the most galling lies spread around the south was, “Democrats are for the working man, and also the “best friend” of black Americans. Truth is, as a young boy growing up in the south, witnessing the hypocrisy by the overwhelming Democratic majority-held state and local governments was sickening.
More disgusting was their demonization of the minority Republicans, who were trying to help black people gain their full freedoms via self-responsibility and the rule of law. Republicans were the ones encouraging all Americans to be self-reliant; especially, not to rely on government for handouts; thinking of government as a father figure.
To be fair, there are Democrats who still believed their party is the best party for the poor.
I recently found among some old photos my mother’s voter registration card from 1957. To my surprise she was a registered Democrat. Knowing my mother, who didn’t follow politics—sadly, she was very misinformed. Sorry mom!
My burden for truth is this:
That you will read Stowe’s important book, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and not listen to hearsay and propaganda.
Also, seek facts about the Democrats in the south BEFORE they changed tactics. By this method, of hiding their true agendas, during the late 1960’s and yet today, it’s all been done to keep power, through giveaways and dividing the races. Sadly, the truth is, their evil plan has worked on poor and uninformed Americans of all races for way too long!
Friends of freedom—only the TRUTH will set you free!
